12. The second Super Special Stage stage ran at noontime at the Antelope Valley Fairgrounds, and it marked the start of a come-back which has put Ken Block back in the rally. Having lost 17 seconds to Pastrana last night in the arena when he was caught in Travis’ dust, Block was determined to get the jump this time, and he did, putting 2.5 seconds on Pastrana in the side-by-side battle. Then Block went on to take stages #8 and #9, and closed the gap to 29 seconds, but then Pastrana turned up the wick and won stage #10, and now leads the rally by 49 seconds going into Super Special Stage #3. After that, the cars go back in the woods for only two more stages before the end of the event.
13. Meet the "Cast of 300" - The Rim of the World Rally Volunteers
One of the best ways to become actively involved in Rim is to become an event volunteer. You'll meet all the teams, see the cars in action, and learn first-hand what rally competition is all about! There are many interesting jobs available. You can volunteer to help with registration or tech inspection, be a spectator area marshal, or be a timing control worker at the start and finish of the stages. If you're an amateur radio operator, you can join one of the teams providing the vital and extensive communications links for the rally.
Volunteers are traditionally given perks such as t-shirts, hats, free meals, etc. This year several vendors graciously donated items specifically for the volunteers. These included Toyo Tires (www.toyo.com), Subaru Southwest Region (www.rally.subaru.com) and Checkpoint Racing (www.checkpoint-racing.com).
"We are so thankful for our volunteers. They are the heartbeat of the success of this event. Many are local people from the Lancaster/Palmdale area and other parts of Southern California, while others travel here from all over North America," said Volunteer Director MaryAnne Shults.
"No experience is required. A training session for timing control workers and a Volunteer Thanks Barbeque is hosted by the organizers each year a few weeks prior to the rally."
